{ Welcome to the FASTBACK PLUS demo. Whenever you see the message below, press the <SPACE BAR> to continue with this demo. <ESCAPE> stops the demo and gives you control of FASTBACK PLUS.}'
{ Pressing the <ALT> and Q keys simultaneously will quit FASTBACK PLUS and bring you back to the Trial Disk Demonstration Menu. }'
{ This demo will step through many of the FASTBACK PLUS menus. However, it will not actually do a backup.}'
{ To do a backup reliably FASTBACK PLUS must be setup for your computer. The FBINSTAL program is used to setup FASTBACK PLUS. }'
{ The option "I" on the Trial Disk menu automatically executes FBINSTAL. We recommend that this procedure be done after reviewing this demo or refer to the guide. }'
{ For information on using FBINSTAL and FASTBACK PLUS, refer to the guide provided on the trial disk.}'
{ If you should encounter any problems while using this demo, you can restart it from DOS by typing "DEMO". }'
{ FASTBACK PLUS uses a very simple "point and shoot" menu system to control all of its exciting features. Let's take a quick look at the menus. }'
{ This is the Backup menu. It is used to copy data from your hard disk to diskettes. We'll get back to this in a minute. }'
r~
{ This is the Restore menu. It is used to copy data from backup diskettes to a hard disk. We will explain this in more detail later. }'
o~
{ This is the Options menu. It is used to give you control over many of the FASTBACK PLUS features, like "User Level." }'
b~
{ Now, let's see how we would do a backup.}'
{ We'll use the FBDEMO directory for this demonstration, so none of your existing files will be touched.}'
{ First, we'll select the hard disk we want to back up from. We do this simply by pressing <ENTER> when the "light bar" is on HARD DISK}'
h)~~
{ FASTBACK PLUS has already filled in the letter of your default drive, but we could change it to any valid drive specification. }'
$/2~~
{ The next selection is Choose Files.}'
)~
{ We type in the name of the first directory we want to back up.}'
~"FBDEMO"~~
{ If we wanted to back up ALL of our hard disk files, we would have left this line at its default, "\". Now we tab to the File Selection field.}'
(~~
{ Just as in DOS, "*.*" means ALL files in the directory. But let's say we only want to back up the "*.FB" files.}'
/L"FB"~(~
{ Our demo directory doesn't have subdirectories, but if it did, we could choose whether or not to include them in the backup. }'
{ We can also "point and shoot" individual files to back up, by calling up the directory listing. The directory listing is called up with the F3 key. }'
=3~/2~/2~(~~/2~/2~
{ Just position the cursor over the file you want to select, and press the INSERT key. }'
/I~$~
{ The directory and filename are automatically inserted! For now, however, we just want to back up our small demo directory, so we'll erase this line }'
/B~
$~/2~)~
{ The Destination is the device we are making the backup to. NOTE: This may change when you install FASTBACK PLUS with the FBINSTAL program. }'
$~/2~)~
{ We can choose from three different types of backup. A FULL backup is what you might expect: one that backs up all the files we included. }'
/2~
{ An INCREMENTAL backup is a "partial" backup -- it only backs up files that haven't changed since the last backup. }'
/2~
{ A DIFFERENTIAL backup only backs up files that have changed (or been created) since the last FULL backup. Let's reset the menu to FULL. }'
/2~
$~/2~
{ Now we'll PREVIEW the backup. }'
)~~
{ The little triangle next to the "FBDEMO" directory means that it contains files that are scheduled for backup. Let's look into it. }'
~/2~/2~/2~/2~
{ Moving the cursor down the directory tree causes the files in each directory to be listed. These unmarked files will not be backed up. }'
~$~/2~
{ Now let's select Start Backup. . . }'
)~
{ . . . but first, let's make an estimate of how long it will take -- and how many disks it will use. }'
~)~~
{ Since it is such a small backup, it will only use one disk. And look at all the other useful statistics the estimate gives you . . . }'
~~/6~
{ Since we have not setup FASTBACK PLUS we will not actually do the backup. To start the backup you would highlight the Start Backup option and hit <enter>.}'
~~
~Q~)~/6~
{ The RESTORE options are pretty much the same as the backup options, so we won't spend a lot of time on them now. }'
~)~{ Select the hard disk to restore to here. }$
~/2~{ You can selectively choose files to restore the same way you do for a backup. }'
)~$~/2 { Restore Source is similar to the Destination option under the Backup menu. }'
~)~$~/2~
{ If you wanted to restore files to a different directory, you'd do it here. }'
~)~/2~/2~$~/2~
{ Now let's select Start Restore . . . }'
~)~
{ If we want to make SURE our backup is 100% accurate, we can COMPARE it to the original files on the hard disk. }'
~/6~/6~/6~
{ This would guarantee data security! }'
~/4~/4~/4~~
{ The estimate lets FASTBACK PLUS perform a "SMART RESTORE" -- it prompts you to insert ONLY those disks needed to bring all your files up to date! }'
~/6~
{ Naturally, there is nothing to restore now -- but if there was you would simply highlight Start Restore and hit <enter>. }'
~Q~)~/6~
{ We won't cover ALL the options in this brief demo -- you'd be here all day! }'
{ One of the most interesting options in FASTBACK PLUS is the User Level. You may have noticed it on the Options menu.}'
~)~
{ Watch what happens when we change from Beginner level to Experienced . . .}'
/2~)~
{ More options! In fact, you'll see that ALL the menus are longer:}'
B~~R~~O~~
{ Don't worry, you don't need all these options to get started. The Advanced level DOESN'T have more options -- in fact, it has less:}'
)~/2~)~B~~R~~O~~
{ This is because many advanced users prefer to choose their options with function keys instead of menus. The lines at the bottom of the screen are a memory aid.}'
~/2~/2~/2~/2~/2~/2~/2~
{ For more information on any topic in FASTBACK PLUS, just press the <F1> key.}'
~=1~~~
{ Advanced users get less help than beginners! }'
~$~/2~)~
{ Data Compression can radically reduce the time and disks it takes to back up. You can choose to optimize for maximum time or disk saving. }'
~/2~/2~/2~$~/2~
{ And FASTBACK PLUS gives you complete control over your screen colors, for every section of the program. }'
~)~~)~$~$~/2~)~
{ Advanced Error Correction lets you recover data from your backup disks, even if they're physically damaged! }'
~$~/2
{ The function keys at the bottom let you quickly access other FASTBACK PLUS features. For example, the <F2> key shows you ALL of your current settings. }'
~=2~~~$~
{ You can also save complete SETUP files for instant re-loading. Or, press <F7> to save KEYSTROKE MACROS automatically, while you work. }'
~=7~
{ A MACRO can automate anything you want to do with FASTBACK PLUS, keystroke for keystroke. In fact, this whole DEMO is a FASTBACK PLUS MACRO! }'
~$~
{ We hope you have enjoyed this brief introduction to FASTBACK PLUS. You are now free to use the program as much as you like. }'
{ This is a FULLY FUNCTIONAL demo of FASTBACK PLUS. The only limitation is that it will only back up 2 megabytes of data. }'
{ Now that you've seen for yourself how powerful FASTBACK PLUS is, we are sure you'll want to purchase a copy. }'
~)~B~)~
{ Thanks again for giving us the opportunity to show you FASTBACK PLUS. Press <SPACE>, then <ALT>-Q to Quit Fastback Plus. }'
